Carports in Adelaide do a lot of work. They protect your car from harsh summer sun and sudden hail, give you somewhere dry to unload the shopping in winter, and, on many homes, sit right at the front of the house where everyone sees them. We design and build custom carports for homes across greater Adelaide from our base in Brooklyn Park.
As carport builders, we focus on getting three things right: a size that genuinely fits your vehicles, a roof style that suits your home, and durable construction that stands up to Adelaide’s weather.
Single, double and custom carports
The right carport size depends on your vehicles, your driveway and how you use the space. We design every carport to suit the site rather than working from a fixed kit size.
Single carports
A single carport suits one vehicle on a narrower driveway or a side-of-house position. It’s a common choice on older blocks and smaller lots where space is tight.
Double carports
A double carport covers two vehicles side by side and is a popular choice for family homes with two cars. Getting the width right matters: you want room to open doors and walk between cars without squeezing past posts.
Custom carports
Some sites and vehicles need something different, such as extra length for a ute or trailer, extra height for a caravan, boat or four-wheel drive with a roof rack, or a carport that fits an unusual or angled space. We design custom carports around those measurements.
Where your carport can go
Most carports sit in one of a few positions, and each comes with its own design considerations.
- Beside the house. A carport along the side of the home often connects to the house and shares its roofline, which keeps the look tidy and gives undercover access to a side door.
- In front of the house or garage. Front carports are highly visible, so roof style, colour and post placement matter for street appeal. Boundary and street setbacks also come into play.
- At the rear of the block. A carport at the back can shelter a second car, a trailer or a boat, and usually has more freedom in size and roof style.
We’ll look at your driveway, access and boundaries during the measure and recommend the position and layout that make the most sense.
Gable and flat roof carports
Roof style has the biggest effect on how a carport looks from the street.
| Flat (skillion) roof | Gable roof | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Simple, clean and modern | Pitched peak that echoes a house roof |
| Height | Lower profile | Extra height at the centre |
| Suits | Modern homes, tight spaces, rear carports | Front-of-house carports, character homes |
| Roofing | Colorbond sheeting | Colorbond sheeting |
Gable carports often look more like part of the house, which is why many people choose them for carports at the front of the home. Flat roof carports are simpler and work well beside a house or at the rear of the block. For a closer look at the options, read our guide to carport roof styles.
Durable construction for Adelaide weather
A carport needs to cope with everything Adelaide’s climate throws at it.
- Sun and heat. A solid roof gives vehicles shade through hot summers, protecting paint and keeping the cabin cooler.
- Hail and storms. A Colorbond roof shelters vehicles from hail and heavy rain.
- Wind. Carports are open structures, so the frame, footings and fixings are designed for wind loads, particularly on exposed coastal and Hills sites.
- Coastal air. Near the coast, salt air affects metal, so material and fixing choices matter.
- Drainage. Gutters and downpipes direct roof water away from the driveway, the house and your neighbours.
We build carports with steel framing and Colorbond roofing, so the structure is strong, slim and available in colours that suit your home.
Designing a carport that suits your home
A carport at the front of the house becomes part of your home’s street appeal. We think about:
- Roof pitch and colour, chosen to sit comfortably with your existing roof.
- Post positions, placed so they don’t get in the way of car doors or the path to the front door.
- Height, allowing for your tallest vehicle, roof racks and the slope of the driveway.
- Connection to the house, where the carport sits beside the home, so it ties in neatly with the existing roofline.
If you’d also like a covered outdoor area out the back, we build verandahs and patios too, and can design both with matching materials.
Council approval for carports
Many carports need approval, but the requirements depend on size, height, how close the carport sits to boundaries and the street, and your property’s zoning. Properties in heritage or character areas may have extra considerations.
Check with your council or PlanSA before committing to a design. Our guide to council approval for carports and verandahs in South Australia explains the general process, and we help with drawings and paperwork where approval is needed.

What affects the cost of a carport
Every carport is quoted on its own design. The main factors are:
- Size. Double and custom carports use more material than single carports.
- Roof style. Gable roofs generally involve more framing than flat roofs.
- Height and span. Taller carports and wider spans need larger framing members.
- Footings and ground. Posts set into existing concrete, paving or sloping driveways need different footing details.
- Connection to the house. Tying into an existing roofline can take more work than a freestanding design.
- Extras and approvals, such as integrated lighting, decorative trims, drawings and council approval.
Our guide to carport costs in Adelaide covers these factors in more depth, and our carport vs garage comparison helps if you’re still deciding. When you’re ready, call 0485 008 292 or use the quote form, and we’ll be in touch within 24–48 hours.
