Munno Para is a northern suburb in the City of Playford, about 32 km north of the Adelaide city centre, between the Gawler railway line and Main North Road. The ground is generally flat, and much of the newer housing came through the Playford Alive renewal estates. We build pergolas, patios and other covered outdoor areas here to make the most of compact backyards.
What do Munno Para homeowners usually need?
Most Munno Para enquiries come down to one goal: a shaded, rain-proof outdoor space that works on a smaller block.
Newer homes often have a modest alfresco under the main roof. Older homes from the earlier subdivision may have a tired flat roof out the back or no cover at all. In both cases an attached patio roof or verandah is usually the most practical first step.
Which way does your yard face?
Orientation decides more about comfort than almost anything else.
- North-facing yards get winter sun, which is pleasant, but summer sun sits high overhead. A solid roof with a modest overhang handles both.
- West-facing yards cop the hot afternoon sun. An insulated patio roof cuts radiant heat from above, and the depth of the roof helps keep late sun off the table.
- South and east-facing yards are naturally cooler. A lighter pergola, or a roof with some translucent sheeting, keeps the area from feeling dark.
Our article on pergola shade ideas goes further into choosing a roof for hot summers.
Making a compact yard work
On a flat, smaller block every square metre counts. A few things we look at:
- Setbacks and boundaries. We check how close the structure can sit to fences before settling on the size.
- Height. Keeping the roof line sensible relative to the house avoids a structure that looms over the yard or neighbours.
- Drainage. On flat ground, roof water has to go somewhere. We plan gutters and downpipes so water isn’t dumped onto paving or lawn.
- What’s left over. A covered area that swallows the whole yard isn’t always the right answer; we’ll leave room for a garden or play space if you want it.
Carports on narrow frontages
Many Munno Para homes have a single garage and a second car in the driveway. A flat or gable carport beside or in front of the garage can cover it, subject to setbacks and approval. We measure the frontage and clearances before suggesting a size.
Steel, timber or a mix?
For most Munno Para homes, the choice comes down to the look of the house and how much upkeep you want.
- Steel frames with a Colorbond roof suit modern estate facades, need little maintenance, and can span further between posts, which keeps a small yard feeling open.
- Timber frames give a warmer, softer look and suit garden settings, but they need periodic oiling or painting to stay in good condition.
- Steel posts with a timber or Colorbond roof is a common middle ground if you want the look of one with the practicality of the other.
We’ll bring colour and material options to the measure so you can see them against your house.
Council approval
Munno Para sits within the City of Playford. Whether your pergola or verandah needs approval depends on its size, height, roof and where it sits on the block. Our guide to council approval for a pergola in SA covers the basics, and we help with the paperwork where it’s required.
