Campbelltown is a north-eastern suburb about 9 km from the Adelaide city centre, with the River Torrens and its parklands along the north-west edge and Lower North East Road running through the middle. It’s a family suburb with a lot of established homes, and the outdoor questions we hear most are practical ones: more covered space for the kids and visitors, shelter for a second car, and somewhere to sit outside in summer. We build pergolas in Campbelltown, along with verandahs, carports and decks, to answer exactly those.
A quick planning checklist
Before you call, it’s worth thinking through a few points. We’ll cover all of them at the measure, but having a view helps.
- What’s it for? Dining, a lounge setting, kids’ play, a barbecue, or all of the above?
- When will you use it? Summer evenings need protection from western sun; winter use needs rain cover.
- Attached or freestanding? Close to the kitchen, or out in the garden?
- What’s under it? Existing paving, a new deck, or lawn?
- What’s on the title? Easements and stormwater lines can affect where posts go.
Verandahs for everyday use
For most Campbelltown families, the first priority is cover right outside the back door. An attached verandah designed to tie in with the existing roofline gives you a dry, shaded space you’ll use daily. Flat and pitched roofs are both available, and insulated roof panels help where the yard faces west.
Pergolas for entertaining
If you already have cover at the back door, a separate pergola can create a second space for entertaining. Steel frames span further with fewer posts; timber suits a garden setting. Our outdoor entertaining area ideas article has layout ideas for Adelaide’s climate.
Carports and driveways
Many established Campbelltown homes have a single garage or carport and a household with more cars than covered spaces. A double or custom-sized carport, with a flat or gable roof chosen to suit the house, adds covered parking. Carports close to the street often need approval, so we’ll check setbacks before settling on a design.
Gable or flat?
A gable roof often matches the pitched roof of the house and gives a more finished look from the street. A flat roof keeps the profile low and can sit under existing eaves. We’ll sketch both if you’re unsure.
Making it work with the house
A carport beside the house should line up with the existing roof and gutters where it can. We look at eaves height, the fascia and how roof water will drain into existing stormwater, so the new structure doesn’t send run-off across the driveway or into the neighbour’s yard.
Near the river
Homes closer to the River Torrens corridor sit on lower ground near the river parklands. Drainage and soil conditions can vary across the suburb, so we check how water moves across your block and design footings to suit. If your property backs onto or sits near the river, ask council whether any specific planning requirements apply.
Approvals with Campbelltown City Council
Campbelltown is within the Campbelltown City Council area. Whether a pergola, verandah or carport needs approval depends on its size, height and position. Our guide to council approval for carports and verandahs explains the process; check with council or PlanSA and we’ll help with the paperwork.
