Tranmere is an established eastern suburb in the Campbelltown City Council area, crossed by Third Creek and known for its gum trees, its parks and the Poets’ Corner pocket with its literary street names. Parts of the suburb have larger minimum block sizes, so many homes have more backyard than is typical closer to the city. We build pergolas in Tranmere with that space in mind.
Making use of a bigger backyard
When there’s room, an outdoor area doesn’t have to be squeezed against the back wall. You can choose the best spot on the block, and that changes what we’d suggest.
Attached or freestanding?
An attached pergola or verandah gives weather cover right at the back door and suits everyday use. A freestanding steel or timber pergola can sit out in the garden, near a pool or under a view, and works more like a pavilion. Some Tranmere homes have both: a verandah for daily use and a separate entertaining pergola further out.
Picking the spot
We look at three things before suggesting a position:
- Sun path. Where the shade falls at the times you’ll use it, especially summer afternoons.
- Trees. Gums drop leaves, bark and the occasional branch. We keep structures out from under large limbs where possible.
- Access from the house. A covered area that’s too far from the kitchen tends not to get used.
Roof choices for an entertaining pergola
For a pergola you’ll use through the year, a Colorbond or insulated panel roof keeps off both summer sun and winter rain. A gable roof suits many of the area’s established homes and gives extra height under the ridge, which helps hot air move out. If you’d prefer filtered light, a timber pergola with partial cover gives dappled shade, though it won’t keep the rain off. Our guide to pergola roof styles compares flat, gable and skillion roofs.
Pools and decking
Larger Tranmere blocks often include a pool, and the area around it is one of the most used parts of the yard. Pool decking in hardwood or composite gives a finished surround that’s comfortable underfoot, and a pergola beside it adds shade for people who aren’t swimming.
Pool fencing has strict rules that affect where a deck, step or structure can go. This guide to pool fencing regulations in SA is a helpful reference, and we design around the fence line.
Third Creek and drainage
Third Creek runs through the suburb, and properties near creek lines can have their own drainage patterns and planning considerations. We check how water moves across your block at the measure, and if your property is near the creek, it’s worth asking council whether anything specific applies.
Carports for long driveways
Many established homes in Tranmere have long driveways and single garages. A double or custom-sized carport, with a flat or gable roof to suit the house, adds covered parking without building a full garage.
Council approvals
Tranmere is in the Campbelltown City Council area. Whether you need approval depends on the structure’s size, height and position, and some eastern-suburbs properties also have character controls. Our guide to council approval for pergolas in South Australia explains how it works; check with council or PlanSA.
