Mount Barker has its own weather, and that shapes how we approach pergolas in Mount Barker. The town sits in the Adelaide Hills about 33 km south-east of the city, at a higher elevation than the plains. It is generally cooler and wetter than Adelaide, with frosts on clear winter nights.
An outdoor area here needs to work in July as well as January.
A growing town with plenty of new homes
Mount Barker has grown quickly over recent decades, with new subdivisions spreading out from the original town. Many newer homes come with a covered alfresco under the main roof, or a slab out the back waiting for something more.
That gives us a few common starting points:
- Extending an existing alfresco so the covered area is big enough for a table and lounge
- Roofing a bare slab to create a proper patio
- Adding a carport or second car space where the garage is full
- Building a deck to level out a yard that falls away from the house
Patios Mount Barker households can use all year
Because rain and cold are a bigger factor here than on the plains, we usually recommend a solid roof over an open frame.
| Roof option | What it does well | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Colorbond sheeting | Durable rain cover, wide colour range | Can be noisy in heavy rain without insulation |
| Insulated roof panels | Finished ceiling, quieter, better temperature control | Suits insulated patio roofs and integrated lighting |
| Open pergola frame | Filtered light, lighter look | Shade only, no rain cover |
Our guide to insulated patio roofs explains how panels differ from single-skin sheeting.
If you want something more enclosed, an alfresco extension can turn an outdoor area into a more sheltered space attached to the home.
Carports and decks
Our carports come in single, double and custom sizes, with flat or gable roofs to suit the house. In a cooler climate, a carport also keeps frost off the windscreen on winter mornings.
For yards with a fall, a timber or composite deck provides a level surface without major earthworks. Composite boards are worth considering if you want to avoid oiling in a damp climate.
Designing for frost, rain and the odd hot day
Mount Barker does still get hot summer days, so the best outdoor areas here balance both seasons. A few points we weigh up:
- Roof pitch and gutters. Heavier winter rain needs gutters and downpipes sized to cope, and a pitch that sheds water quickly.
- Morning sun. In a cool climate, winter sun is welcome. We look at whether part of the roof should let light through or stop short of the house.
- Side protection. A screen on the wettest or windiest side can make the area far more comfortable in winter.
- Timber care. Damp conditions can be harder on exposed timber, so finishes and detailing matter more here.
Estate rules and council approval
Mount Barker sits within Mount Barker District Council. Some newer estates also have their own design guidelines covering colours, materials or setbacks. Check those along with council or PlanSA requirements. Our council approval guide gives a general overview, and we help prepare drawings where approval is needed.
Also in the Hills
We cover other Hills suburbs too, including Blackwood.
